Walk through a tax document checklist to help you gather everything you need before filing. Track what you have and what's still missing.
-
Review common documents — Go through this standard checklist with the user:
- W-2s (from each employer)
- 1099s (freelance, interest, dividends, investments)
- Mortgage interest statement (1098)
- Student loan interest (1098-E)
- Health insurance (1095-A/B/C)
- Charitable donation receipts
- Property tax records
- Childcare expenses
-
Scan email for documents — Use your email skill to search for tax-related emails: W-2 notifications, 1099 delivery alerts, year-end statements, and charity donation confirmations.
-
Check what's arrived — Mark each document as received, pending, or not applicable based on what you find.
-
Identify gaps — Flag any documents that should have arrived by now but haven't. Most W-2s and 1099s are due by January 31.
-
Create action items — For each missing document, suggest a next step (contact employer, check online portal, call the bank, etc.).
