The Cheating Numbers Behind ChatGPT for Teachers
A Study.com survey found over a quarter of teachers have caught a student cheating with ChatGPT. Here's what that number actually measures — and what it doesn't.
The headline statistic that follows ChatGPT everywhere in education is a survey finding: more than one-fourth of teachers say they have caught a student using ChatGPT to cheat. It's the number people reach for when they argue that OpenAI's free-for-teachers offer is pouring fuel on a fire. It's a genuinely useful data point. It's also one of the most misread numbers in the whole conversation, because "over 25% of teachers have caught a student" is not the same claim as "over 25% of students cheat with ChatGPT" — and the gap between those two sentences is where most of the bad reasoning lives.
Getting this straight matters, because ChatGPT for Teachers is a teacher-facing product. If you're going to weigh whether giving 400,000 educators a free professional account makes cheating better or worse, you first have to be honest about what the cheating data does and doesn't tell you.
What the survey actually measured
The Study.com figure is a survey of teachers, reporting their own experience. The unit being counted is a teacher who says: at some point, I caught at least one student using ChatGPT dishonestly. That's it. It is a measure of detected incidents as experienced by the adult in the room, aggregated up to "what share of teachers have run into this at least once."
Read carefully, the number is almost unsurprising. ChatGPT reached a hundred million users faster than any consumer product in history. In a classroom of thirty teenagers with phones, it would be strange if fewer than a quarter of teachers had ever caught one obvious case. "More than 25% of teachers have encountered this at least once" is compatible with a world where cheating is rampant and a world where it's rare-but-visible. The statistic alone can't distinguish between them.
The survey counts teachers who caught a student, not students who cheated. A single detected essay in a single class is enough to put that teacher inside the "over 25%." The number tells you cheating is present, not how prevalent it is.
There's a second, quieter caveat. Surveys like this are typically self-selected and online — the teachers most engaged with the AI-cheating question are the most likely to answer, and the most likely to have a story. That doesn't make the finding wrong. It makes it a floor on awareness, not a clean estimate of rate.
"Caught" is a floor, not a ceiling
Here's the part that cuts in the opposite direction, and fairness demands stating it too. Detected cheating is, by definition, only the cheating that got detected. Every case a teacher noticed is one case; the cases that slid through don't show up in anyone's tally. So the true rate of AI-assisted cheating is almost certainly higher than the detected rate — we just have no reliable way to say how much higher.
Why can't we pin it down? Because the detection itself is unreliable. The tools teachers lean on to catch AI writing are wrong often enough that they can't anchor a real measurement — a problem serious enough that it gets its own article in this series. When your instrument produces both false positives and false negatives at meaningful rates, "how many did we catch" stops being a proxy for "how many happened." The survey number is trapped between two forms of error: it undercounts the cheating nobody caught, and it's inflated by whatever share of "caught" cases were actually honest students flagged wrongly.
The honest summary is uncomfortable but precise: we know AI-assisted cheating is real and common enough that most teachers have met it. We do not know its prevalence, and the data we have can't tell us. Anyone quoting the 25% figure as if it were a cheating rate is smuggling a conclusion the survey never supported.
Why free teacher access doesn't move the student-cheating dial
Now connect it to the actual product. The instinct is to assume that a free OpenAI account for every teacher must, somehow, worsen student cheating. But trace the mechanism and it doesn't hold, because ChatGPT for Teachers doesn't touch student access at all.
The offer is gated to verified K-12 educators and staff, checked through SheerID against a school email or documentation. A student cannot get an account through it. And students who want to cheat with AI already have the consumer version of ChatGPT — free, on the phone in their pocket, entirely outside the school's control. The cheating dynamic is powered by that consumer access, and it existed before the teacher product shipped and would exist if the teacher product vanished tomorrow. Handing teachers a professional account changes what the adult can do; it adds exactly zero new capability to the student side of the ledger.
If anything, the causal arrow that's plausible runs the other way. A teacher fluent in the tool is better positioned to redesign assignments that are hard to fake, to recognize the texture of machine-generated prose, and to have the direct conversation that detection software can't. That's the case OpenAI and the AFT make for teacher AI literacy in the first place — that the defense against misuse is a knowledgeable teacher, not a locked-down student. Whether the training delivers on that is a fair open question. But "free teacher accounts cause more student cheating" is not a mechanism anyone has actually described; it's an association standing in for one.
What the number is good for
None of this means the statistic is useless — it's just useful for a narrower claim than it usually gets stretched to cover. It's strong evidence that AI-assisted cheating has crossed from hypothetical to routine in teachers' lived experience. It justifies taking the integrity question seriously. It explains why districts reacted the way they did, a story picked up in why Baltimore, LA, NYC, and Seattle banned ChatGPT. What it does not justify is a specific prevalence rate, a claim about trends over time, or the assertion that a teacher-facing free tier makes the problem worse.
The discipline here is the same one this whole batch of the series tries to hold: separate what the data measured from what people want it to prove. "Over a quarter of teachers have caught a student cheating with ChatGPT" is true, sobering, and real. It is also, on its own, nearly silent about how many students cheat, whether the number is rising, and what any particular product will do about it. Treat it as a smoke detector, not a thermometer. It tells you there's a fire somewhere in the building. It doesn't tell you how hot.
