A fair critical review of OpenAI's free teacher course — what it teaches well, and the gaps around AI grading, hallucination, and detection it glosses over.
A course review that only praises is an advertisement, and a course review that only attacks is a grudge. ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers deserves neither. It's a genuinely competent piece of free professional development that also has a soft spot in exactly the place that matters most — and the honest thing to do is hold both of those at once. Having walked its syllabus and looked at how it's delivered in person, this piece grades it: what it earns, and where it loses points.
What the course gets right
Give credit where it's due, because there's real credit to give.
First, the structure is pedagogically serious. OpenAI split its training into a conceptual course (AI Foundations) and an applied one (ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers), which is the difference between teaching and demoing. A lesser company ships "50 prompts for teachers" — a listicle that spikes usage and builds no durable skill. Sequencing how it works before how to use it is the choice of someone who actually wants teachers to understand the tool, and it should be recognized as the harder path.
Second, the task selection is honest about the job. The course targets lesson plans, quizzes, and parent emails — the actual load-bearing chores of teaching, the ones that create the second shift after the students leave. It didn't pick flashy demos; it picked the work that eats evenings. That's a course designed around the teacher's real week, not a marketing reel.
Third, and most importantly, it keeps saying "responsibly." The framing throughout is that the teacher remains the editor of record — the AI drafts, the human approves. That's the correct mental model, and putting it front and center is the single best thing the course does.
The course earns its marks on everything up to the moment the tool is wrong. Its grade depends entirely on how well it prepares a teacher for that moment — and that's where the honest review gets harder.
Where it goes quiet
Now the deduction. The course teaches teachers to use ChatGPT for grading-adjacent and content-generation tasks. The uncomfortable question is whether it teaches them, with equal force, about the ways those exact tasks fail. On the available evidence, the emphasis is lighter than it should be — and the stakes of that gap are documented.
Consider the three soft spots.
Hallucination in the answer key. The course promotes generating quizzes and assessment items. But a language model produces plausible text, not verified fact, and it does so with identical confidence whether it's right or wrong. An answer key with a subtle error — a mislabeled correct option, a flawed worked solution — is more dangerous than no key at all, because a busy teacher trusts it and a whole class inherits the mistake. A course built around quiz generation needs to drill verification as hard as it drills generation. "Stay the editor" is the right instruction; the question is whether a day of workshop or a video module makes it a reflex or just a slogan.
The limits of AI grading. Using AI to evaluate student work is seductive precisely because grading is the most time-consuming task there is. But it's also where the model's failure modes are most consequential and least visible — inconsistent standards applied to different students, confident scoring of things it can't actually assess, feedback that sounds authoritative and misses the point. A course that opens this door owes teachers an equally strong warning about what's on the other side of it.
The detection trap. Here's the risk the course can't fully own but teachers live inside. A Study.com survey found more than a quarter of teachers had already caught a student cheating with ChatGPT, and the tempting response — AI-detection software — is itself unreliable, with tools running roughly 10-20% inaccurate. That inaccuracy isn't abstract; it's a false accusation against a real student. A teacher trained to embrace AI enthusiastically, without a sober unit on detection's failure rate, is a teacher set up to make a costly error in the other direction.
The deeper thing the course can't fix
Some of what's missing isn't a curriculum gap OpenAI could patch — it's a tension baked into the whole enterprise, and a fair review has to say so.
There's research suggesting real cost to over-reliance. As the National Education Association has documented in weighing the technology's classroom pros and cons, educators are genuinely split, and one much-discussed MIT study found weaker cognitive engagement among students who leaned on ChatGPT to write essays — the mental muscles that don't fire when the tool does the lifting. A course teaching teachers to generate content fluently is, unavoidably, adjacent to a habit that can atrophy the very skills school exists to build. That's not OpenAI's fault, and it's not fully OpenAI's job to solve, but a course that never raises it is teaching half the picture.
And the structural point stands: this is a free course produced by the company selling the tool. Even a scrupulously fair curriculum has a gravitational pull toward adoption over caution, because the sponsor's interest is a teacher who uses more, not less. That doesn't make the content dishonest. It means the skepticism has to be supplied partly from outside the course — which is the entire reason a series like this one exists.
The grade
So where does it land? On a fair curve, ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers is a solid, above-average piece of free professional development — better structured and more honest about real work than most vendor training, and genuinely useful to a teacher starting from zero. It does the hard part, workflow, well.
It loses points on proportion. It's loudest where the tool is helpful and comparatively quiet where the tool is dangerous, and in K-12 the danger — a wrong answer key, a bad grade, a false cheating accusation — lands on a child who had no say. The fix isn't to scrap the course. It's to pair it with the missing unit: a hard, unglamorous session on verification, hallucination, the limits of AI grading, and the 10-20% detection error rate, taught with the same energy as the lesson-plan demo.
Take the course. It's worth the time. Then supply the caution it undersells yourself — because the most important skill isn't prompting ChatGPT well. It's knowing, in the exact moment it hands you something confident and wrong, that it might be lying.
